Swimming in the river and a summery atmosphere in the heart of summer in southern Ardèche in August

Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche beaches — ~15 min from the Mas ⭐ Top pick

Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche is our number-one swimming address from the Mas. The village marks the end of the Ardèche Gorges — it’s where canoeists arrive after their great crossing — and has two supervised beaches in July-August, both Blue Flag certified 2026. Excellent water quality, easy access, full facilities.

Grain de Sel beach

The main beach, right by the village. Large pebble and sand beach, shallow water for the first few metres (ideal for young children), then progressive depth. Lifeguards on duty 1 July to 31 August. Toilets, changing facilities, car park. View of the perched village of Aiguèze across the river — one of the finest backdrops in the region.

2026 feature: the beach has full disability access — pontoon to the water, adapted toilets, dedicated parking and a beach wheelchair (tiralo) for easier swimming.

Blue Flag 2026 ✅ — water quality: excellent.

Sauze beach

In the Sauze hamlet, about 20 minutes on foot from the village centre (or driveable). More natural than Grain de Sel, alternating sand and rock, facing the Gard cliffs. The classic arrival point for the 24 km canoe descent. Blue Flag 2026 ✅ (new label 2026) — water quality: good.

Getting there

Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche is 15 minutes from Mas Saint Antoine via the D86 northbound. Free parking on site. In summer, arrive before 10 am for easy parking.

Pont Cassé beach, Saint-Just-d’Ardèche — ~15 min from the Mas

A beautiful, little-known spot. Small sandy beach, sheltered, lifeguarded in July-August, Blue Flag 2026 ✅. Excellent water quality. Calm and family-friendly — a quieter alternative to the larger beaches.

Pont d’Arc beaches, Vallon-Pont-d’Arc — ~20 min from the Mas

The most spectacular beaches in the area — two pebble beaches flanking the 54-metre natural arch. Swimming is free and unrestricted. The upstream beach is lifeguarded 1 July to 31 August.

In peak season, on-site parking is paid (€0.80/quarter-hour). The easy solution: take the free shuttle from the Vallon-Pont-d’Arc tourist office car park — every 20 minutes in July-August.

Vogüé riverside — ~15 min from the Mas

In Vogüé, the river flows through the village. Wide, accessible banks with pebble and sand beaches right at the foot of the medieval village. Unguarded — adapt vigilance with children. Great to combine with a visit to the medieval village and château.

Practical tips

What to bring

  • Water shoes — essential on pebble beaches, which can be slippery when wet
  • SPF 50 sunscreen — river reflection intensifies sun exposure
  • Drinking water — river water is not drinkable; 1 litre per person minimum
  • Hat and sun shirt for young children
  • Armbands or buoyancy vest for non-swimmers

After storms

In southern Ardèche, storm events — even distant ones — can cause rapid, unpredictable rises in river level. After heavy rain upstream, check levels on the Vigicrues app before heading out. Supervised beaches have evacuation protocols for rising water. When in doubt, use the Mas pool.

Best times

Beaches fill up between 10 am and 4 pm in July-August. Arriving before 9:30 am is the best strategy for finding space and catching the water at its freshest. Late afternoon after 5 pm is also good — crowds thin and the light on the cliffs is superb for photos.

The Mas pool: the no-car option

For days when you’d rather not drive, or for toddlers who prefer a calm, enclosed setting, the Mas Saint Antoine 13×6 m saltwater pool is right there. Soft salt water (not chlorinated), secured. Many guests alternate river days and pool days throughout their stay.
