Just 30 minutes from our estate, this 29 km winding road overlooks the Ardèche river between Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, offering eleven spectacular viewpoints 200 meters above the canyon.
In this complete guide, we propose our favorite one-day loop itinerary from Mas Saint Antoine, with the exact order of belvederes, the best photo stops, the ideal season and all our advice as local hosts to fully enjoy this experience.
What is the Ardèche Gorges belvedere route?
The D290 scenic road, created in 1969, runs along the Ardèche Gorges on the left bank for 29 km, from Vallon-Pont-d’Arc to Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche. It crosses the National Nature Reserve of the Ardèche Gorges, classified since 1980, which covers over 1,500 hectares and shelters exceptional fauna and flora (vultures, Bonelli’s eagles, beavers, wild goats, Mediterranean garrigue).
Eleven belvederes have been developed by the Ardèche Departmental Council along this road. All are free and unrestricted access, with parking and safety facilities. With its 1.2 million annual visitors, it is one of the most visited sites in the department.

Which belvederes to choose if time is limited?
If you only have a half-day, we recommend in priority four must-see belvederes:
- Serre de Tourre (no. 1): the first visual shock, essential
- Belvédère de la Madeleine (no. 5): the Cathedral Rock, one of the most iconic
- Belvédère des Templiers (no. 6): the Madeleine Circus, iconic photo
- Belvédère du Ranc Pointu (no. 11): to close in beauty
Our recommended loop from Mas Saint Antoine (100 km, 1 day)
Step 1 — From Mas Saint Antoine to Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (30 min, 30 km)
Recommended departure: 9 a.m., ideally after coffee on the Mas terrace. You leave Bourg-Saint-Andéol via the D4 towards Saint-Remèze. The journey crosses the limestone plateau, through garrigue scented with thyme and rosemary. Saint-Remèze is a pretty perched village worth a quick photo stop. Then you descend to Vallon-Pont-d’Arc in another 15-20 minutes.
Step 2 — Pont d’Arc break (10 min)
Before starting the belvedere route, take a break at the famous Pont d’Arc, this natural arch 54 m high carved by the river 500,000 years ago. The Pont d’Arc viewpoint itself is not in the official count of 11, but the stop is essential.
Step 3 — The 11 belvederes route (3 to 4 hours with stops)
Allow on average 15 to 20 minutes per belvedere for parking, the short approach walk (very short except for the Madeleine), contemplation and photos. Some belvederes require a few minutes of walking from the parking, notably the Madeleine (500 m easy trail).
Our advice: don’t try to do everything in detail. Do all 11 belvederes but give more time to 3-4 of them depending on your preferences (views, photos, geology, history).
Step 4 — Lunch break in Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche or Aiguèze (1h-1h30)
Arriving in late morning or early afternoon at Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, you can have lunch in one of the village’s restaurants or take a detour through Aiguèze, classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France and perched on the cliffs on the Gard side. The crossing of the Saint-Martin suspension bridge offers a beautiful view.
Step 5 — Return to Mas Saint Antoine (40 min, 30 km)
Return via Saint-Just-d’Ardèche, then ascent on the D86 along the Rhône to Bourg-Saint-Andéol. You can also extend the day with a refreshing swim in the Mas saltwater pool, or aperitif on the panoramic terrace with views of Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail.
When to visit the Ardèche Gorges belvederes?
What is the best season?
The road is open year-round and the belvederes are accessible 7 days a week (except for rare temporary closures in case of rockfall, as occurred in March 2024 and February 2025). But not all seasons offer the same experience:
| Season | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (April-June) | Garrigue in bloom, soft light, few people | Weather sometimes capricious |
| Summer (July-August) | Guaranteed weather, ecoguards present | Crowds, saturated parking, overwhelming midday heat |
| Off-season (Sept-Oct) ⭐ | Golden light, ideal temperatures, few people, autumn colors | None |
| Winter (Dec-March) | Total solitude, magnificent low-angle light | Sometimes strong wind, some restaurants closed |
Our host recommendation: favor the off-season
September and October are without doubt the best time to discover the belvederes. Temperatures remain mild (18-25°C during the day), the light takes on golden tones in late afternoon, and most importantly you will avoid the summer crowds that saturate the parking lots and somewhat spoil the magic of the places.
For photography enthusiasts, this is also the season when the garrigue takes on orange tones and contrasts on the cliffs are most pronounced. At Mas Saint Antoine, we always have availability in the off-season for couples as well as for groups privatizing the estate (up to 38 people for a family weekend or corporate seminar).
How long should you plan for the complete loop?
Plan a full day, approximately 8 to 9 hours from your departure from Mas:
- Mas → Vallon-Pont-d’Arc: 30 min
- Pont d’Arc stop: 10-15 min
- The 11 belvederes with stops: 3 to 4h
- Lunch Saint-Martin or Aiguèze: 1h-1h30
- Return to Mas: 40 min
- Unexpected stops, photos, ice cream, etc.: 30 min-1h
If you wish to take your time, spread the walk over two half-days, dedicating the first to belvederes 1 to 6 and the second to belvederes 7 to 11 plus Aiguèze.
Practical tips for a successful day
- Leave early: before 9 a.m. in summer, before 10 a.m. in off-season. The first belvederes empty out in the afternoon when the crowds return.
- Fill up before Vallon-Pont-d’Arc: no gas station on the D290 between Vallon and Saint-Martin.
- Bring water and a hat: in summer, some belvederes have no shade.
- Closed shoes recommended: access steps can be slippery (especially at Ranc Pointu and Madeleine).
- Watch out for children: belvederes are secured but with 200 m drops below, keep young children close.
- Picnic possible: some belvederes have tables (Serre de Tourre, Gournier). Otherwise surrounding villages offer many options.
- Consider the Visorando app or IGN maps if you want to add a short hike.
Are the belvederes free?
No fee. Access to the 11 belvederes is completely free, parking included. Only some related activities are paid: visit to the Madeleine Cave, canoe rental at Pont d’Arc, visit to the Caverne du Pont d’Arc (Chauvet Cave 2). The D290 scenic road itself is a departmental road open 24/7.
Which activities to combine with the belvedere route?
To optimize your day or extend the experience over several days, here are our combination suggestions from Mas Saint Antoine:
- Morning: the belvedere route. Afternoon: swimming at Pont d’Arc or visit to Chauvet Cave 2.
- Day 1: belvederes + Aiguèze. Day 2: descent of the Gorges by canoe (view from the river, complementary to the view from the belvederes).
- For seminar groups: morning belvederes + gourmet lunch in Saint-Martin + return to Mas for a working session then dinner on the panoramic terrace.

Frequently asked questions about the Ardèche Gorges belvederes
How many belvederes are on the Ardèche Gorges route?
There are exactly 11 belvederes officially developed by the Ardèche Departmental Council on the D290 scenic road, between Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, over a distance of 29 km.
How long does it take to do the 11 belvedere route?
Allow 3 to 4 hours to drive the scenic route with a stop at each belvedere. If you leave from Mas Saint Antoine for a complete loop with lunch, plan a full day of about 8 to 9 hours.
Are the Ardèche Gorges belvederes free?
Yes, access to the 11 belvederes is entirely free, parking included. The D290 scenic road is a departmental road open year-round. Only ancillary activities (caves, canoe) are paid.
What is the best season to visit the belvederes?
The off-season (September-October) is ideal: mild temperatures of 18 to 25°C, golden light, few people and autumn colors. Spring is also pleasant with the garrigue in bloom. Summer should be avoided in midday (heat and crowds).
How far are the Ardèche Gorges from Mas Saint Antoine?
The first belvedere (Serre de Tourre) is about 30 minutes by car from Mas Saint Antoine, or 30 km via Saint-Remèze. The last belvedere (Ranc Pointu) on the Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche side is about 25 minutes. The complete loop from Mas represents approximately 100 km.
What are the 4 must-see belvederes if time is limited?
If you only have a half-day, we recommend: Serre de Tourre (first visual shock), Belvédère de la Madeleine (Cathedral Rock), Belvédère des Templiers (Madeleine Circus) and Ranc Pointu (spectacular finish).
Can you do the belvedere route with children?
Yes, the route is family accessible. The belvederes are all secured with barriers. However, keep young children close because the cliffs drop straight down 200 m. The Madeleine belvedere requires a 500 m walk from the parking, which may be a bit long for very young children.
Is the road open in winter?
Yes, the D290 remains open year-round, except for rare temporary closures in case of rockfall (this happened in March 2024 and February 2025, but reopenings were quick). In winter, the road is very lightly used and offers a unique atmosphere with the season’s low-angle light.
Can you do the belvedere route by bike?
Yes, but it’s a demanding course reserved for trained cyclists due to elevation gain and summer traffic. An electric assist bike makes the experience much more accessible. Allow 4 to 6 hours by bike on the 29 km (one way) with stops at the belvederes.
Which activities to combine with the belvedere route?
Best combinations: morning belvederes then afternoon swimming at Pont d’Arc, or day 1 belvederes and day 2 descent of the Gorges by canoe to have both points of view. You can also extend with a visit to Aiguèze (most beautiful village of France perched on cliffs Gard side) or Chauvet Cave 2.
