Tucked away in the Ibie Valley, just 40 minutes from Mas Saint Antoine, lies one of southern Ardèche’s most spectacular sites: the Gour de la Sompe. This 12-metre double waterfall springs from the limestone rock as if by magic, forming two emerald-green basins at the foot of dizzying cliffs. After ten years welcoming families and groups to Ardèche, we know this site — locally nicknamed the ‘Devil’s Hole’ — is one of those hidden gems our regulars ask about year after year. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.
What is the Gour de la Sompe and why is it so unique?
The Gour de la Sompe is a waterfall located in the commune of Lagorce, in the Ibie Valley, southern Ardèche. Its geological formation is exceptional: the underground Sompe river, after winding through the limestone karst, resurfaces and forms two successive cascades roughly 12 metres high. These waterfalls plunge into two rocky basins believed to have been carved by the gradual collapse of an underground cavity.
The site is also known as the ‘Devil’s Hole‘ (Trou du Diable) by Lagorce locals — a reference to the impressive depth of the lower basin and the dizziness it can cause when approached from above. The water, filtered through layers of Urgonian limestone, takes on the hypnotic green hue typical of southern Ardèche’s karst resurgences.
The site is part of a broader cluster of geological curiosities in the Ibie Valley: the Pertus de Fabria (a narrow rock passage offering a panoramic view), the Ranc de l’Arc (a natural rock arch), and the medieval Notre-Dame d’Ajude Chapel. Many hikers combine these points of interest in a single loop.

How to reach the Gour de la Sompe from Mas Saint Antoine?
The Gour de la Sompe is 32 km from Mas Saint Antoine, roughly a 40-minute drive from Bourg-Saint-Andéol — making it one of the most accessible ‘hidden gems’ in southern Ardèche.
Distances from major cities
| From | Distance | Drive Time |
|---|---|---|
| Mas Saint Antoine (Bourg-Saint-Andéol) | 32 km | 40 min |
| Vallon-Pont-d’Arc | 10 km | 15 min |
| Avignon TGV | 85 km | 1h15 |
| Lyon | 200 km | 2h30 |
| Marseille | 160 km | 2h00 |
| Paris | 670 km | 6h30 |
Where to park?
From Mas Saint Antoine, head towards Saint-Remèze then Vallon-Pont-d’Arc. From Vallon, take the D579 towards Aubenas, then in Vogüé turn towards Lagorce on the D1. Three kilometres before reaching Lagorce, a small parking area on the right (along the D1, at the start of the forest path to ‘les Silhols’) is the ideal starting point.
Only about ten spaces are available: in fine spring weather, arrive before 10 a.m. No facilities on site (no toilets, no water point, no bins) — plan accordingly.
What to see and do at the Gour de la Sompe?
1. The double waterfall and its emerald basins
The main attraction, of course. When the Ibie is flowing, two 12-metre cascades fall successively into rocky basins forming a natural amphitheatre. The upper basin is more accessible and ideal for contemplation. The lower one is deeper (1.5 to 4 metres depending on season) and surrounded by slippery rocks.
Important: swimming at the Gour de la Sompe is officially discouraged by local authorities (cold underground water, uneven bottom, sometimes hazardous access).
2. The Pertus de Fabria viewpoint
About 30 minutes’ walk further from the Gour, the Pertus de Fabria is a narrow rock passage opening onto one of the finest viewpoints in the Ibie Valley. Plunging views over the meanders, oak forests and perched villages. Best photographed in golden late-afternoon light.
3. The full loop via Notre-Dame d’Ajude Chapel
Experienced hikers can link the Gour, the Pertus de Fabria and the Notre-Dame d’Ajude Chapel into an 8-9 km loop. The Ajude woods offer welcome shaded walking in the off-season, and the partly ruined medieval chapel (12th century) is a beautiful picnic spot.
4. The village of Lagorce
On your way back, take time for Lagorce itself: this Ardèche wine village is worth a stop for its alleys, Romanesque church and Sunday morning market. Allow 30 minutes.
Which hiking route to choose?
| Route | Distance | Duration | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct return to Gour de la Sompe | 2 km | 45 min | Easy (families) |
| Gour + Pertus de Fabria | 6 km | 2h00 | Moderate |
| Full Ajude woods loop | 8-9 km | 2h30-3h | Moderate (244m climb) |
Bernard’s tip: the trail markings can be sparse. Download a GPS track on Visorando or IGNrando’ beforehand, and keep IGN map 2939OT (Vallon-Pont-d’Arc) available offline. Mobile coverage is virtually non-existent in the valley.
When is the best season to visit the Gour de la Sompe?
This is the decisive question, because the Gour de la Sompe is a strongly seasonal site: the waterfall only flows part of the year. Without water, the site is still pretty but loses 80% of its appeal.
Spring (March to June): the ideal time
Spring is by far the best season. After winter rains, the Ibie and Sompe are full and both cascades run at peak flow. April-May-June is the optimal window.
Summer (July-August): generally to be avoided
In summer, the Sompe is almost always dry. The basins remain visible but without the spectacle of falling water. Unless after a major summer storm (only 2-3 days afterwards), don’t bother in July-August.
Off-season (September to November): our favourite period
This is the period we recommend to our guests seeking authenticity. In September-October, after the first autumn rains, water flow resumes. Crowds drop dramatically: you may have the site almost to yourself on weekdays. Autumn colours in the oak woods transform the hike into a magical photography moment. If you’re organising an off-season group weekend or a corporate retreat, the Gour de la Sompe is exactly the kind of discovery that makes a difference — and this is also when Mas Saint Antoine has full availability to host 20-38 people in private booking.
Winter (December to February): for the purists
In winter, the waterfall is at peak flow but access becomes technical: frozen rocks, slippery trail, short days. Reserved for experienced, well-equipped hikers.

What budget should you plan?
Good news: the site is entirely free, with no ticket office or opening hours. Only minor expenses to anticipate:
| Item | Cost 2026 |
|---|---|
| Site access and parking | Free |
| IGN map 2939OT (optional) | €11.80 |
| IGNrando’ Premium app (optional) | €2.99/month |
| Round-trip fuel from Mas | ~€10-12 |
What mistakes to avoid?
- Going in midsummer without checking the Ibie’s water level. The site without the waterfall is very disappointing.
- Approaching the edge from above without caution. The ‘Devil’s Hole’ nickname isn’t a joke: vertical drop of 12 metres, slippery stones even in dry weather.
- Attempting to swim in the lower basin. Water is very cold (14-16°C year-round), deep, with submerged rocks. Officially discouraged.
- Relying on trail markings alone. The area is poorly marked. GPS and IGN map essential beyond the direct route.
- Forgetting closed shoes. No sandals or flip-flops: rocky path, roots, technical descents.
Where to eat and stay nearby?
- Le Lagorce (Lagorce village centre): traditional Ardèche cuisine, shaded terrace. €22-28 set menu. Reservation recommended on weekends.
- Auberge de Saint-Maurice-d’Ibie (8 km south): local produce, stone setting, warm welcome. €35-45 menu.
- Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (10 km): wide range of restaurants, ideal after a combined Gour + Pont d’Arc day.
For accommodation, Mas Saint Antoine at Bourg-Saint-Andéol is the ideal base: just 40 minutes from the site, you combine the serenity of a 2-hectare rural estate (pool, air-conditioning) and quick access to all of southern Ardèche’s gems.
