Soirée pique-nique en plein air dans un village ardéchois lors des Pique-Niques de la Chouette

Les Pique-Niques de la Chouette: free summer evenings in Ardèche villages

Some summer events don’t need to be spectacular to be unforgettable. Les Pique-Niques de la Chouette (the Owl Picnics) are one of them. Every Thursday evening in July and August, the Gorges de l’Ardèche – Pont d’Arc Tourist Office takes over a different village for a free open-air evening — no ticket, no booking, just locals and holidaymakers gathering on the grass with a picnic, live music, stargazing and local flavours. Simple, convivial, and deeply Ardèche.

The concept: do nothing and just be together

The philosophy behind the Pique-Niques de la Chouette is summed up in one line from the organisers: Do nothing and just get together. A basket of gentle activities to dip into as you please. No ticket, no fixed schedule, no main stage. You arrive whenever you like from 6 pm, lay out your blanket, let the children go to the workshops, listen to the musician or look at Jupiter through a telescope.

That lightness is exactly what makes these evenings unforgettable. You plan to stay an hour and find yourself still there at midnight.

What happens at a Pique-Nique de la Chouette?

Each evening runs from around 6 pm to midnight. The programme varies by village and edition, but the recurring ingredients are:

  • Live music — a local group or duo plays acoustically: folk, manouche jazz, soul, Occitan, pop. The sound is more ambient backdrop than formal concert.
  • Stargazing — at nightfall, the Ophiuchus astronomy club sets up telescopes. Southern Ardèche has very low light pollution, making it an exceptional stargazing territory.
  • The storyteller — tales and stories for young and old, in the hour when the cicadas give way to crickets.
  • Children’s workshops — owl-making, wild basketry, cyanotype printing, travel sketchbooks, medicinal plant workshops depending on the village.
  • Guided walk — a local association leads a stroll through the village or surroundings from around 6 pm.
  • Local food trucks and winemakers — if you don’t want to bring your own picnic, food trucks and local winemakers are on site.
  • The Maharaja carousel — the pedal-powered carousel that has become the emblem of the Chouette, a children’s favourite.

Where and when do the evenings take place?

The evenings are held every Thursday in July and August, in a different village each time, across the Gorges de l’Ardèche territory. Villages that regularly host the Chouette include Saint-Montan, Saint-Just-d’Ardèche, Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche, Gras, Viviers and Bourg-Saint-Andéol. All are 10 to 20 minutes from Mas Saint Antoine.

For the exact 2026 dates, check the official Tourist Office website: gorges-ardeche-pontdarc.fr.

Three tips to make the most of it

  1. Bring chairs or a blanket. There isn’t always seating on site, and settling comfortably on the grass changes the experience entirely.
  2. Prepare a picnic with local produce. The markets in Bourg-Saint-Andéol and nearby villages are full of Ardèche producers. The Chouette is the perfect opportunity to open the cheeses and charcuterie you’ve picked up during the week.
  3. Stay for the stargazing. Often the part children talk about the next day. Discovering Jupiter or the Milky Way with a passionate amateur astronomer is the kind of moment you can’t plan — and don’t forget.
