Labeaume, character village, is one of southern Ardèche’s best-kept secrets. Nestled at the foot of majestic limestone cliffs, by the turquoise Beaume river, this medieval village truly deserves your time. After 10 years orienting our guests at Mas Saint Antoine, we’ve noticed that those who discover Labeaume always speak of it with wonder. Here’s our complete 2026 guide to visit this jewel, 50 minutes from the Mas.
Why is Labeaume labelled as a Character Village?
Labeaume obtained its Character Village label in 1998. Although not part of France’s Most Beautiful Villages (unlike Vogüé and Balazuc), Labeaume offers an equally authentic experience, often with less crowds.
What makes Labeaume unique: spectacular position at the foot of high limestone cliffs riddled with caves, the turquoise Beaume river (Ardèche tributary), the famous Récatadou hanging gardens (19th-century agricultural terraces), 142 dolmens on the commune (highest density in Europe), the Labeaume en Musiques festival (unique outdoor classical music festival), and a fully pedestrian medieval centre.

Where is Labeaume and how to get there from Mas Saint Antoine?
| From | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Mas Saint Antoine | 45 km | 50 min |
| Vogüé / Balazuc | 15 km | 25 min |
| Avignon TGV | 100 km | 1h20 |
| Lyon | 190 km | 2h10 |
What to see and do in Labeaume?
1. The Récatadou hanging gardens (must-see)
Built in the early 19th century, these agricultural terraces are set in the vertical walls of a limestone promontory overlooking the Beaume gorges. Guided tours every Friday morning (9:30am-12pm) from April to mid-September.
2. Medieval streets and viewpoint
The fully pedestrian medieval heart is discovered on foot in 1 hour. For the best panorama, climb to the viewpoint on the right bank: cross the submersible bridge, follow the marked path (15 min walk, medium level).
3. Beach and swimming in the Beaume
The pebble beach at the village heart is one of the prettiest swimming spots in the region. Turquoise waters, limestone cliffs. Bring river shoes, the pebbles are very slippery.
4. The 142 dolmens walk
Labeaume holds the record: 142 dolmens on the commune, highest density in Europe. A 9 km loop allows you to discover several, with great panorama.
5. The Labeaume en Musiques festival
Every summer, mid-July to mid-August, Thursday and Friday evenings, the village hosts a unique music festival. Classical, baroque, opera and world music played on natural stages: the river, a clearing, a cave, a chapel.
When to visit Labeaume?
Spring (April-June): ideal period, hanging gardens tours resume, perfect temperatures, river at maximum flow.
Summer (July-August): liveliest season with festival but more crowded.
Off-season (September-October): our favourite. Golden light, mild temperatures, river still swimmable in early September, chestnut and picodon season. For an off-season group weekend, the period regulars recommend — when Mas Saint Antoine offers most availability for property privatisation.
Winter (November-March): very few people, intimate atmosphere.
What to avoid during your visit?
- Forgetting river shoes: pebbles and submersible bridge are very slippery.
- Missing the viewpoint: the 15 min walk is worth it.
- Bringing a stroller: impossible in the medieval centre.
- Confusing Labeaume and Balazuc: the Viel Audon hamlet is in Balazuc, not Labeaume.
- Visiting at 2pm in summer: little shade in the streets. Come early or late.
