Village d'Alba-la-Romaine avec son château perché sur la coulée de lave basaltique en Ardèche méridionale

Alba-la-Romaine: Medieval Village and Gallo-Roman Site — 2026 Complete Guide

Alba-la-Romaine is a unique village in southern Ardèche. Former capital of the Gallic Helvii people that became a prosperous Gallo-Roman city, this character village combines 2000 years of history in one place: exceptional archaeological site, ancient theatre, medieval castle perched on a lava flow, and renowned contemporary circus festival. Here’s our complete 2026 guide, 35 minutes from the Mas.

Why is Alba-la-Romaine unique in Ardèche?

Alba-la-Romaine bears three labels: Character Village, major archaeological site (former Gallo-Roman capital Alba Helviorum), and cultural site with the Alba Festival (contemporary circus). The superposition of eras makes it unique: Gallo-Roman city preserved under the vineyards, 11th-century medieval castle on a volcanic lava flow, ancient theatre still in activity, and the Roche hamlet with its basaltic neck.

What to see and do in Alba-la-Romaine?

1. MuséAl and the archaeological site (must-see)

The MuséAl, Alba-la-Romaine’s museum and archaeological site, plunges you into the heart of the former Gallo-Roman city Alba Helviorum, capital of the Helvii people 2000 years ago. The visit includes the ancient theatre, residential quarters with preserved mosaics, forum, temple, baths, and a modern museum with sculptures, imperial statue and daily objects. Adult fare 5-7 €, free for children and first Sunday of the month.

2. The castle of Alba and medieval village

Dominating the village from its basaltic lava flow, the castle of Alba combines an 11th-century keep, 15th-century façade and 19th-century additions. Now houses art exhibitions in season. The surrounding medieval village offers beautiful streets with houses in black (basalt) and light (limestone) stone, 17th-century Clock Tower and treasure hunt for children.

3. The hamlet of Roche and Roc Saint-Jean

Away from the centre, the Roche hamlet houses an exceptional basaltic neck — the Roc Saint-Jean, ancient eroded volcano.

4. The Alba Festival (contemporary circus)

Every summer (July 9-14, 2026 for the 16th edition), the village hosts the Alba Festival, flagship event of contemporary circus arts in Ardèche. Free MuséAl entry during the festival.

5. Sunday market

Small friendly weekly market every Sunday morning with local producers: Côtes du Rhône Villages wines, cheeses, honey, charcuterie.

When to visit Alba-la-Romaine?

Spring (April-June): ideal period. MuséAl open in full hours, perfect temperatures.

Summer (July-August): liveliest period around the Alba Festival.

Off-season (September-October): our favourite. MuséAl still open in September, golden light on the ancient stones, Côtes du Rhône Villages vendanges. For an off-season group weekend, the period regulars recommend.

Winter (November-March): reduced MuséAl hours, but contemplative atmosphere.

What to avoid during your visit?

  1. Visiting MuséAl on a Tuesday: closed Tuesdays.
  2. Skipping the archaeological site: many visitors only see the museum and forget the site. Allow 2h for both.
  3. Not booking for Alba Festival: shows fill up quickly.
  4. Confusing medieval village and ancient site: two distinct ensembles. Allow 5 min walk between them.
  5. Bringing a stroller: difficult in the medieval centre.
