Village médiéval d'Aiguèze perché sur sa falaise au-dessus des Gorges de l'Ardèche

Aiguèze, Most Beautiful Village in France: 2026 Complete Guide

Aiguèze, most beautiful village in France, is one of the essential stops in southern Ardèche. Perched on a limestone cliff overlooking the river, this 11th-century medieval Gard village transports you out of time in just a few steps. After 10 years welcoming families and groups at Mas Saint Antoine, we’ve noticed it’s one of the first excursions our guests recommend to their friends. Here’s a complete guide to discovering Aiguèze like a local, with the right tips for 2026.

Why is Aiguèze classified as a Most Beautiful Village of France?

Aiguèze obtained its classification among the Most Beautiful Villages of France in 2005, after a long selection process. The village ticks all the label’s boxes: perfectly preserved medieval centre, exceptional landscape integration, no car circulation in the historic heart, architectural heritage carefully restored.

What makes Aiguèze unique is its geographical position. Perched 100 metres above the Ardèche river, just at the southern exit of the Gorges, the village offers a striking panorama few other medieval towns can claim. It’s also the only Most Beautiful Village located exactly at the border between Gard, Ardèche and Drôme provençale — a strategic position that shaped its history.

Today, Aiguèze, most beautiful village in France, welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year without losing its authenticity — traffic is forbidden in the centre, and shops remain human-sized.

Where exactly is Aiguèze and how to get there from Mas Saint Antoine?

The village is located in the Gard department (30), in the very north, on the left bank of the Ardèche river, just opposite Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche. It’s one of the 4 Most Beautiful Villages in Gard along with Montclus, La Roque-sur-Cèze and Lussan.

What are the distances to Aiguèze from major cities?

From Distance Time
Mas Saint Antoine 18 km 25 min
Avignon TGV 60 km 55 min
Lyon 200 km 2h
Paris 670 km 6h30

What to see and do in Aiguèze?

1. The Castelas ramparts walk (must-see)

This is THE highlight of the visit. The ramparts walk follows the ancient 11th-12th century fortifications and offers a 180° panorama over the Ardèche river, the Côtes du Rhône vineyards and, on clear days, Mont Ventoux. Allow 15-20 minutes for the full loop.

2. Medieval streets and the cobbled main street

The heart of the village is discovered on foot in 45 minutes to 1 hour. The cobbled streets of Ardèche pebbles, the arcades, the vaulted passages, the Renaissance mullioned windows and the blonde stone facades compose a timeless picture.

3. The former olive oil mill (tourist office)

Built in the 16th-17th centuries, this mill turned tourist office preserves its original millstone. Free access. This is also where you’ll find brochures and advice for surrounding hikes.

When to visit Aiguèze? Which season to choose?

Spring (April-June) — the best season

Flowering, pleasant temperatures (18-25°C), moderate crowds. This is the recommended period to fully enjoy the village without the crowds.

Summer (July-August) — high season

Heavy crowds, especially in the middle of the day. The village can become packed between 11am and 4pm. Local market on Thursday morning (July-August only), outdoor concerts and medieval festivals liven up the town.

Off-season (September-October) — our favourite

This is the ideal season to enjoy Aiguèze with few people. The Côtes du Rhône harvests are in full swing, golden light enhances the stone facades, and temperatures remain mild (20-25°C during the day). For a weekend with a group off-season, it’s the period regulars recommend. And it’s also at this time that Mas Saint Antoine offers the most availability for privatising the property.

Winter (November-March) — for lovers of tranquility

Very few people, incredible light on mistral days, some restaurants closed. To be preferred if you’re looking for a contemplative and photographic experience.

What to avoid during your visit?

  1. Coming in the middle of the day in summer: the village is saturated between 11am and 4pm in July-August. Prefer early morning (before 10am) or late afternoon (after 5pm).
  2. Bringing a stroller: streets are cobbled and steep. A baby carrier is much more comfortable.
  3. Underestimating the ramparts walk: bring closed shoes (no flip-flops). Some passages are narrow and exposed.
  4. Not booking the restaurant in high season: terraces with views fill up quickly, especially on weekends.
  5. Confusing Aiguèze and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche: the two villages face each other on either side of the river. Aiguèze is in Gard (perched), Saint-Martin in Ardèche (by the water).
