You’ve probably seen it on Instagram: a limestone arch sculpted by the river, 60 meters wide, 54 meters tall, towering over the turquoise waters of the Ardèche. Pont d’Arc is one of France’s most-visited natural sites — and incidentally, our direct neighbor at Mas Saint Antoine, just 30 minutes away by car. Here’s everything you need to know to enjoy this wonder fully and avoid the traps of peak hours.
What exactly is Pont d’Arc?
The Pont d’Arc is a natural limestone arch carved by the Ardèche river over millions of years. It marks the entrance to the famous Ardèche Gorges, a spectacular 30-km canyon classified as a National Nature Reserve.
Some figures to grasp the scale:
- 54 meters high (the equivalent of an 18-story building)
- 60 meters wide
- Over 500,000 visitors per year
- Designated Grand Site de France
The Combe d’Arc is the name of the river meander that forms a natural loop just before the arch. It hosts a vast pebble beach, very popular with swimmers and picnickers in summer.
How to reach Pont d’Arc?
From Mas Saint Antoine
Allow 30 minutes by car via the D290, the panoramic Gorges road. The road itself is an attraction: 47 km of curves along the cliffs, with around ten viewpoints designed for stops and photos.
Parking
The main parking area is in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, the neighboring village. Several options:
- Combe d’Arc parking: the closest to the site (5-min walk), paid in high season (5-8 €/day)
- Free parking in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc center: 15-20 min walk to the arch
- Charmasson area: for motorhomes
Tip: in July-August, arrive before 10 AM or after 5 PM to find parking easily. Between 11 AM and 4 PM, it’s saturated.
What to do at Pont d’Arc?
1. Swim at the beach
The Combe d’Arc beach is a pebble beach with translucent water. Gradual depth, perfect for children. Beware of currents downstream from the arch (unsupervised area).
Bring water shoes: pebbles are slippery, and some areas have sharp gravel.
2. Canoe down the Gorges
The flagship experience: canoeing down the Ardèche Gorges. Several options:
- Mini-descent (8 km, 2-3h): Vallon-Pont-d’Arc → Châmes. Ideal with kids 7+. €18-25/person.
- Half-descent (16 km, 4-5h): Vallon → Sauze or Gaud. For teens and active adults.
- Full descent (32 km, 1-2 days): Vallon → Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche. With bivouac. Ages 12+.
Many rental companies in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc. Book ahead in high season, especially weekends.
3. Hike to the viewpoints
The Gorges road (D290) is dotted with panoramic viewpoints accessible by car, plus a few minutes of walking:
- Serre de Tourre Viewpoint: dizzying view over the Pas du Mousse meander
- Pont d’Arc Viewpoint: the postcard view, 5-min from parking
- Cathédrale Viewpoint: impressive rock formation
- Balcon des Templiers: less crowded, breathtaking view
4. Visit the Caverne du Pont d’Arc (Chauvet Cave 2)
5 minutes by car. It’s the life-size replica of the UNESCO-listed Chauvet Cave. A must-do in southern Ardèche, detailed in our practical guide to Chauvet Cave 2.
When to visit Pont d’Arc?
April-May and September-October: the best seasons
Mild weather (18-25°C), few crowds, beautiful light. The river is cooler for swimming but ideal for canoeing (stronger flow). Lower accommodation rates.
June and September: just before and after school holidays
Ideal compromise: water already warm, moderate crowds. Our recommendation for couples and families with young children.
July-August: peak season
Maximum crowds. Very hot (30-35°C), water perfect for swimming. But book everything well in advance (canoeing, accommodation, restaurants).
Winter: the magic of quiet
Very few visitors, mystical atmosphere with morning mists on the river. Ideal for photography and hiking. No canoeing or swimming, but viewpoints remain accessible.
Mistakes to avoid
Mistake 1: Going at midday in July-August
Between 12 PM and 4 PM, it’s hellish: parking saturated, beach overcrowded, queues everywhere. Aim for 9-11 AM or 5-8 PM to enjoy peacefully.
Mistake 2: Underestimating canoe fatigue
4 hours of paddling under the sun is exhausting. Plan a quiet day after — not a hike or another physical activity.
Mistake 3: Forgetting sunscreen and hats
On the river, the sun beats down and reflects off the water. Sunburn guaranteed without protection. SPF 50 cream, hat, UV sunglasses are mandatory.
Mistake 4: Trying to do everything in one day
Pont d’Arc + canoeing + Chauvet Cave 2 + Vallon-Pont-d’Arc in one day is too much. Spread over 2-3 days to truly enjoy. That’s the right length for a stay at Mas Saint Antoine to discover the area.
