What is Château des Roure?

Château des Roure is a medieval fortress listed as a Historic Monument, with a surprising twist in its history: over the centuries, the castle was transformed into a magnanerie — a place for raising silkworms. The visit thus tells two stories in one: medieval life, and the adventure of silk in Ardèche.

But what makes the site’s reputation is its animated medieval park, which brings the Middle Ages to life through demonstrations and animations throughout the day.

The visit has two parts

  • The indoor visit of the castle and magnanerie (about 1 hour): an audio tour guides you room by room. This visit corresponds to the time slot chosen at booking.
  • The medieval park animations (free access all day): war machine demonstrations, blacksmith workshop, trebuchet firing, immersive trails.

The not-to-miss animations

The engines of terror

Demonstrations of medieval war machines, commented by the castle’s animators.

The giant’s shot

The highlight of the day: the firing of the world’s largest trebuchet. An impressive show for children and parents alike.

The blacksmith’s workshop

A meeting with a blacksmith who works iron before your eyes and tells of his trade and life in the Middle Ages.

Candy firing at the trebuchet

The animation children love: a trebuchet that catapults candy.

The Dragon’s Awakening

An immersive trail in the castle’s underground passages: children set off on an adventure to save the medieval city and wake the dragon, guardian of a treasure.

The ghost legend

A strange presence haunts the underground passages… This mysterious legend thrills young and old.
